Dr. Iftikhar Hussain
MD & Director
Dr. Iftikhar Hussain’s remarkable journey in the field of Allergy Immunology and research has been one of dedication and innovation. He completed his fellowship in Allergy Immunology and research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. During this time, Dr. Hussain’s pioneering work included the development of a murine model for allergic rhinosinusitis and groundbreaking research on the immunomodulatory effects of anti-IL-5 antibodies on eosinophilic inflammation in the upper airways of mice. His passion for advancing patient care and education inspired his path towards a career in clinical medicine.
In July 1999, Dr. Hussain joined the University of Iowa as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine within the Division of Allergy and Immunology. Here, he initiated several investigator-led clinical trials, contributing significantly to the field’s progress.
Driven by a thirst for academic excellence and a commitment to research, Dr. Hussain returned to Washington University in St. Louis in 2003. His research is dual-focused: delving into the pathophysiology of atopic diseases while simultaneously developing novel therapeutic approaches. However, it’s his unique ability to translate knowledge from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside that sets him apart. At his Allergy Asthma and Immunology Center, Dr. Hussain maintains an active clinical research program, consistently exploring new therapeutic options for patients who have exhausted conventional regimens. Cristina Barnes, a dedicated Family Nurse Practitioner, became an invaluable part of the AAIC team in 2021. Her journey to this role began when she immigrated to the U.S. from Romania as a child, growing up in West Texas before making Oklahoma her home. Her connection with Dr. Hussain started as a patient, and during a clinical rotation at AAIC, she was drawn to his innovative approach to medicine.
Driven by her passion for excellence, Cristina is currently on a mission to establish national certification standards in allergy, asthma, and immunology for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
Cristina’s educational background includes earning her MSN and BSN degrees with honors from the University of Oklahoma. She is also a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. In her leisure time, she finds joy in spending quality moments with her family and maintaining an active lifestyle.
